Most activation problems trace back to a short list of causes. Before diving into error codes, run through these — they resolve the large majority of cases:
Add a Defender exclusion first. Security software quarantining the activator is the single most common reason activation "fails". Exclude the folder before running.
Run as administrator. Activation must write to the licensing store, which needs elevation.
Extract properly. Use WinRAR with password 123456; don't run from inside the archive.
Re-run after updates. A feature update can reset activation — simply activate again.
Look up your error code
If Windows shows a specific code, go straight to it: connectivity codes like 0xC004F074, permission codes like 0x80070005, or corruption codes like 0x80073712. The full activation-error index lists every one with a fix.
Windows Defender flags KMS activation tools as HackTool:Win32/AutoKMS by default because they modify volume licensing parameters. This is a well-documented false positive. To proceed, temporarily disable real-time protection or add the KMSPico folder to your Defender exclusion list before extracting the archive.
Open Settings → Privacy & Security → Windows Security → Virus & threat protection → Manage settings → Exclusions → Add an exclusion → Folder. Select the folder where you plan to extract KMSPico. This prevents Defender from quarantining the binaries.
This error means the local KMS client cannot reach a valid KMS host. Disable any VPN or proxy, restart the Software Protection Service (sc start sppsvc), and re-run the activator as Administrator. If the issue persists, run slmgr /skms kms.windowskms.com:1688 followed by slmgr /ato.
KMSPico installs a local KMS service that renews activation automatically every 180 days. As long as the service stays installed and scheduled tasks remain active, your system remains permanently activated in practical terms.
