Digital License vs Product Key: What's the Difference?

Windows can be activated two ways, and the difference matters when you re-install or change hardware. Here's a plain-English explanation of a digital licence versus a product key, how to tell which you have, and which is better.

What a product key is

A product key is the classic 25-character code (XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX). You type it in to activate. It's a credential you hold; if you lose it, recovering activation can be a hassle. Retail and many older licences work this way.

What a digital licence is

A digital licence (Microsoft calls it a "digital entitlement") ties activation to your hardware and, optionally, your Microsoft account — no code to type. Windows 10 and 11 use this widely. After the first activation, Microsoft remembers your device, so a clean re-install on the same hardware activates automatically once it's online.

How to tell which you have

Go to Settings → System → Activation:

  • "Windows is activated with a digital licence" — entitlement-based.
  • "Windows is activated with a digital licence linked to your Microsoft account" — best case for re-installs.
  • If it references a product key, you're on the key model.

More methods are in our activation status guide.

Which is better?

For most people a digital licence linked to a Microsoft account is the more convenient option — it survives re-installs and even hardware changes (via the Activation Troubleshooter) without hunting for a code. A product key is more portable between different PCs (for retail keys) but easier to lose. Our KMS vs digital licence comparison covers how both stack up against free KMS activation.

Where KMS activation fits

KMS activation is a third path: it uses public Generic Volume Licence Keys and a local Key Management Service rather than a personal key or account entitlement. It's the free route when you don't have either — KMSPico applies it in one click, or use the slmgr commands manually. For the underlying technology, see what is KMS activation.

Summary

  • Product key = a code you enter; portable but losable.
  • Digital licence = entitlement tied to hardware/account; best for re-installs.
  • KMS = free activation via local host when you have neither.
