How to Activate Windows 11 on Unsupported Hardware

Plenty of people run Windows 11 on hardware Microsoft officially calls "unsupported" — older CPUs, or PCs without TPM 2.0 or Secure Boot. A common worry is that activation won't work on these machines. Good news: activation is completely separate from the hardware requirements. If Windows 11 is installed and running, it activates exactly like it does on a supported PC.

Why the confusion exists

Microsoft's TPM 2.0 / CPU requirements are installation gates — they control whether the official installer will set up Windows 11, not whether it can be licensed afterwards. Once Windows 11 is on the machine (via an in-place upgrade workaround, a registry bypass, or a modified install image), the licensing system treats it like any other Windows 11 install.

Activating on unsupported hardware

Use whichever route fits your situation:

1. A licence you already own

A valid Windows 10 or 11 digital licence or product key activates Windows 11 on unsupported hardware just fine — go to Settings → System → Activation and enter it or sign in. Windows 10 keys are accepted for Windows 11.

2. Free KMS activation

If you don't have a key, KMS activation works regardless of hardware because it doesn't check TPM or CPU — it activates against a local Key Management Service. KMSPico handles this in one click; see the full Windows 11 activator guide.

3. Manual command line

From an elevated Command Prompt, the slmgr commands install a Generic Volume Licence Key and activate — no hardware check involved.

Will unsupported PCs keep getting updates?

Activation and updates are also separate questions. Unsupported Windows 11 machines generally still receive updates, though Microsoft notes they're not guaranteed. Activation status doesn't affect this either way — an activated unsupported PC and an unactivated one get the same updates.

What about the "watermark"?

Some bypass methods leave a separate "System requirements not met" watermark — that's unrelated to activation and to the "Activate Windows" watermark. Activating Windows removes the activation watermark and unlocks Personalisation; the requirements watermark, if present, is a different setting.

Summary

  • TPM/CPU rules gate installation, not activation.
  • Once Windows 11 runs, activate it normally — key, digital licence, or free via KMSPico.
  • Confirm with slmgr /xpr.
