Office Not Activating After Installation — Fix Guide
If Microsoft Office shows 'Unlicensed Product' after installation, this guide covers every cause and exact fix — from edition mismatch to permission issues.
A fresh Office install that won't activate usually comes down to one of three things — and the first is the most common by far.
Check these in order
Edition type. KMS activation only works on Volume builds of Office. A retail Click-to-Run copy tied to a Microsoft account activates by signing in, not via KMS. Confirm under any Office app → File → Account.
Run as administrator. If you're using KMSPico, right-click and Run as administrator, with all Office apps closed first.
Security software. Add a Windows Security exclusion for the activator's folder before running it.
The most common causes are: running a Retail edition instead of Volume License (KMS only works on volume editions), not running the activator as administrator, or Office apps still running in background during activation.
Open an Office app → File → Account. If it shows 'Volume License' or 'LTSC' under About, KMS activation will work. Retail editions show a product key prompt instead.
KMSPico activates Office 365 Volume License editions. Microsoft 365 Personal/Family subscriptions require a Microsoft account login and cannot be activated via KMS.
